The Golden Sample Is Not Just a Photo

Most buyers treat sample approval as a visual sign-off. That approval gets sent by email, and the project moves forward. But a golden sample only works as a production reference when it is formally tied to the purchase order.

Production Specifications: Measurable Standards

The sample gave you a feel for the product. Production needs a specification sheet. Before the factory commits to bulk output, confirm these parameters in writing:

Packaging Artwork: What Needs Settling

Artwork files that looked finished in a PDF proof reveal problems once they hit the production print process. Before you send files, confirm:

• Files use the supplier’s exact dieline with proper bleeds and safe zones.
• All typography is outlined (Shift+Ctrl+O) and files are in CMYK vector format.
• Label content is finalized (INCI list verified, net count, responsible party).
• Pantone references are listed if color matching is required. Label text changes after printing are expensive; settle content before the print run starts.

The Pre-Production Meeting & Inspection

Request a short pre-production meeting or written confirmation confirming that specs match the golden sample, artwork has passed pre-press, defect tolerances are agreed upon, and the inspection process is confirmed.

For a first order, third-party inspection (SGS, Bureau Veritas) is worth the cost. It should cover patch appearance/adhesion against the golden sample, packaging print quality, seal integrity, and label accuracy. Any gap should be documented before goods leave the factory.
