Spot Patch Golden Sample Approval: How to Lock Your Reference Before Bulk Production

The root cause is rarely a dishonest supplier. It is an approved sample that was never specific enough to serve as a production reference. When material lots change or die-cutting blades wear, the result falls outside what you assumed was acceptable. This article provides a practical workflow to lock your golden sample.

Visual Evaluation Only

Holding a patch and deciding it “looks good” provides no reference. What you approved mentally is not what the factory recorded. When a different operator runs the line three weeks later, there is no documented benchmark.

No Tolerance Specification

If you did not establish what variation is acceptable for thickness, adhesion, or color, the factory has no guidance. Small shifts that are normal in manufacturing become disputes upon delivery.

No Material Lot Lock

Without recording and requesting the specific hydrocolloid lot used for your sample, the factory may substitute similar material for future orders, causing the patch to perform differently.

• ✔ Step 1: Request Multiple Samples. Evaluate 8 to 12 patches from the same batch for thickness uniformity, adhesion consistency, and die-cut edge quality.
• ✔ Step 2: Functional Testing. Test overnight adhesion, fluid absorption performance, and skin sensitivity. Visual checks aren’t enough.
• ✔ Step 3: Document Photographically. Take standardized photos with measurement references (e.g., next to a ruler). A picture is objective; memory is not.
• ✔ Step 4: Written Confirmation. Send written confirmation of specs, material lot, and packaging (ensure all artwork fonts are outlined via Shift+Ctrl+O before submission).
• ✔ Step 5: Pre-Shipment Inspection. Include third-party inspection terms (AQL 2.5) in your purchase order.
